ALPHATHETA LAUNCHES HDJ-F9 WIRELESS DJ HEADPHONES WITH ULTRA-LOW LATENCY
The new HDJ-F9 headphones use AlphaTheta’s SonicLink technology to deliver a 9 ms wireless connection designed for DJ monitoring, alongside Bluetooth connectivity and up to 25 hours of battery life
AlphaTheta has introduced the HDJ-F9, a new pair of wireless DJ headphones designed to tackle one of the biggest barriers to cable-free monitoring in the booth: latency.
Built around the brand’s SonicLink technology, the on-ear headphones offer a reported latency of just 9 ms, significantly reducing the delay typically associated with standard Bluetooth connections.
The result is a pair of headphones designed to give DJs greater freedom behind the decks, while still offering Bluetooth functionality for everyday listening away from the booth.
The biggest addition to the HDJ-F9 is SonicLink, AlphaTheta’s low-latency wireless connection.
According to AlphaTheta, the system operates with just 9 ms of latency, compared with approximately 200 to 300 ms when using standard Bluetooth codecs. That difference is particularly important for DJs, where even a small delay between the mixer and headphones can make accurately cueing and beatmatching difficult.
The HDJ-F9 can be connected instantly to compatible equipment, including the DJM-V5, by touching the headphones to the device. DJs using other mixers can add SonicLink connectivity through AlphaTheta’s separately sold HP-TX01 transmitter.
This means DJs can monitor with one ear, both ears or with the headphones resting on their shoulders without having a cable running back to the mixer.
Inside, the HDJ-F9 features a newly developed 40 mm driver with a PEEK-PU-PEEK composite diaphragm, designed to extend into the sub-bass while maintaining balanced mids and highs.
A bass-reflex chamber positioned at the top of the housing has also been introduced to produce a clearer, punchier kick for monitoring, while an optimised internal structure provides additional sound insulation from loud club environments.
The physical design has also been developed with DJ use in mind. A flexible headband and swivel mechanism support different monitoring positions, while a die-cast aluminium slider adds durability.
For DJs who still want to go wired, the headphones feature a bayonet-locking cable designed to prevent it from accidentally disconnecting during a set.
Battery life reaches up to nine hours when using SonicLink, increasing to as much as 25 hours when listening via Bluetooth with the status LED switched off.
A full charge takes approximately two and a half hours, while a 30-minute charge provides around two and a half hours of SonicLink use.
Away from the decks, multipoint Bluetooth allows the headphones to move between connected devices, giving the HDJ-F9 a second life as everyday wireless headphones.
Users can also connect to AlphaTheta’s HEADPHONES CONNECT app to customise the headphones’ LEDs, switch the status light off and access Find My Headphones, which can display their location or trigger a sound to help locate them.
With wireless headphones historically difficult to use for DJ monitoring because of audio delay, the HDJ-F9 represents AlphaTheta’s latest attempt to remove the cable from the booth without sacrificing the responsiveness DJs rely on.
