CHUNK DAW TURNS MUSIC PRODUCTION INTO A MINECRAFT-STYLE VIDEO GAME
The new music-making game uses a block-based modular system that lets players build, mix, save and export their own tracks
A new video game is looking to blur the line between gaming and music production, with developer sila mack teasing a Minecraft-inspired platform called Chunk DAW.
Currently in development and available in open beta, Chunk DAW transforms the traditional digital audio workstation into an interactive modular world, allowing users to create music by placing and manipulating sound-carrying blocks on a grid.
Created by producer, engineer and graphic designer sila mack, Chunk DAW takes visual inspiration from the block-building format made famous by Minecraft.
Instead of arranging audio across the familiar timeline found in traditional DAWs, players can load different sounds into blocks before placing and looping them alongside one another to create musical sequences.
The result is a more visual and game-like approach to production, potentially making beat-making and electronic music creation more accessible to those unfamiliar with co
Chunk DAW isn't limited to simply arranging blocks. Users can experiment with their creations by adjusting elements including volume and BPM, alongside making further modifications to individual chunks.
There are also hundreds of different materials available for the blocks, giving players plenty of scope to customise the environment while building their tracks.
Most importantly, the music doesn't have to remain inside the game. Chunk DAW allows users to save and export their creations, turning experiments within its virtual environment into playable music outside the platform.
There is currently no confirmed date for a full release, but Chunk DAW has entered open beta, giving early users the opportunity to test the project while it remains in development.
Those interested in trying the game can currently gain access by joining sila mack's Discord community.
The project arrives as the worlds of gaming and music continue to become increasingly intertwined. In recent years, artists, broadcasters and developers have experimented with new ways of bringing music into interactive digital spaces, from virtual performances to music-focused games.
Chunk DAW takes that relationship in another direction, turning the process of actually making music into the game itself — and offering a glimpse at what the next generation of creative production tools could look like.
